MRC denounces violent dispersal of private meeting in Bertoua

The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) has denounced the violent dispersal of a private meeting held by its members in Bertoua on August 30, 2026. According to the opposition party, gendarmes interrupted the assembly of the East Region structures, which was taking place within a private, gated residence.

The intervention was reportedly carried out on the orders of the sub-prefect of Bertoua 2, Orfeo Benasconi Nkomo Mimbo’o. During the operation, the regional federation secretary and the Lom and Djerem departmental federation secretary were forcibly detained without warrants. They were later released after being placed under guarantee on the charge of holding an ‘undeclared public meeting.’

The MRC disputes this charge, arguing that the gathering was held in a private home and did not meet the legal definition of a public meeting. The party characterized the event as an ‘act of state barbarism’ and linked the incident to a broader pattern of political escalation, including the previous exclusion of Maurice Kamto from the 2025 presidential election and the prohibition of the party's national convention in late 2025.
