MRC leadership crisis follows Maurice Kamto resignation
The resignation of Maurice Kamto from the presidency of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) has triggered significant debate within the country’s political landscape. Vincent-Sosthène Fouda has cautioned against viewing Kamto’s departure as a definitive solution to the challenges facing the Cameroonian opposition, arguing that political progress should focus on institutional transformation rather than the removal of individual leaders.
Simultaneously, internal fractures within the MRC persist. Former first vice-president Mamadou Mota has issued a warning to candidates for the party’s upcoming extraordinary elective convention. Mota stated that “no compromise will be tolerated” regarding reconciliation with certain former officials, specifically naming Willy Mengue and his associates as non-negotiable red lines. Mota further characterized any collaboration with the Ministry of Territorial Administration as “high militant treason,” emphasizing the need for the party to maintain its identity as an opposition force.
