Cameroon faces civic space restrictions and media sanctions
Cameroon is facing increased scrutiny regarding civic freedoms and media regulation. The NGO Un Monde Avenir has alerted the UN Human Rights Council to the degradation of public liberties, citing restrictive institutional decisions and constitutional reforms that may undermine universal suffrage and political participation.
In the media sector, the National Communication Council (CNC) has suspended the private television station Vision 4 for one month. The sanctions follow a controversial report regarding an attorney and the station's failure to comply with previous disciplinary measures. Additionally, media professional Philippe Boney has been suspended for one month, and journalist Martial Owona has seen his suspension extended to six months. In response to the suspension, the L’Anecdote Group has begun broadcasting its programming via Vision 4 RCA.
Simultaneously, the Mouvement pour la Renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) has received official authorization for an extraordinary convention scheduled for October 17, 2026, in Odza. While the Ministry of Territorial Administration published the receipt, the move has been interpreted by some as a strategic political signal. The convention faces a legal challenge from former party member Willy Mengue, who has petitioned authorities to prohibit the gathering due to alleged risks of public disorder.
