Mýrdalshreppur driver convicted in fatal motorcycle collision
A man has been convicted in the South Iceland District Court for criminal and traffic violations following a fatal accident in Mýrdalshreppur. The incident occurred in June near the intersection of Kerlingardalsvegur and Route 1, approximately 5 kilometers east of Vík í Mýrdal.
The defendant admitted to making an unsafe left turn while attempting to enter Kerlingardalsvegur, which resulted in a collision with an oncoming motorcycle. The court found that the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely was significantly impaired by sleep deprivation. The motorcyclist died almost instantly at the scene due to severe injuries, including a broken sternum and a ruptured aorta.
The victim's estate and relatives have sought damages totaling over 41 million ISK, including compensation for pain and suffering and funeral costs. While the defendant admitted liability for the accident, he contested the specific amounts claimed by the survivors. The civil aspect of the damages will be handled in a separate legal proceeding.
