Mýrdalshreppur fatal motorcycle collision conviction
Overview
A driver has been convicted in the South Iceland District Court for criminal and traffic violations following a fatal accident in Mýrdalshreppur. The collision occurred in June near the intersection of Kerlingardalsvegur and Route 1, approximately 5 kilometers east of Vík í Mýrdal.
The defendant admitted to making an unsafe left turn while attempting to enter Kerlingardalsvegur, which resulted in a collision with an oncoming motorcycle. The court determined that the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle safely was “significantly impaired by sleep deprivation.” The motorcyclist died almost instantly at the scene due to severe injuries, including a broken sternum and a ruptured aorta.
While the defendant admitted liability, he contested the specific amounts of damages sought by the victim’s estate and relatives, which total over 41 million ISK. These claims include compensation for funeral costs and pain and suffering. Civil proceedings regarding these damages will be handled separately.
