Mérida and Tlaxcala implement flood prevention measures

Municipal authorities in Mérida and Tlaxcala are implementing various infrastructure and maintenance measures to mitigate flooding risks during the current rainy season and the anticipated El Niño phenomenon.

In Mérida, Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada announced the implementation of rain gardens designed to act as sustainable drainage systems by retaining and filtering rainwater into the subsoil. Key projects include modifying slopes in roundabouts like Ciudad Caucel, creating biosystems in areas such as Mérida 2000 and the Miguel Hidalgo and Juan Pablo II neighborhoods, and reactivating a 40-year-old drainage system in Residencial del Norte. Additionally, the city plans to construct 120 new wells and acquire specialized machinery for smaller walkways.

In Tlaxcala, the municipal government is conducting desilting operations on Porfirio Díaz Street to address frequent flooding. Crews have cleared various solid wastes from the drainage systems, including plastic bottles, disposable cups, chair backs, and tires. Local authorities have urged citizens to stop disposing of trash in streets and drains to prevent further obstructions.
