Mexican municipal flood prevention and public works

Local authorities in various Mexican municipalities continue to implement infrastructure upgrades and oversight measures to manage public works and mitigate flooding risks.

In Jalisco, following heavy rains on August 23, authorities in Cihuatlán began conducting a damage census to request state government support for affected residents. In Tlajomulco, the municipal government distributed 1.6 million pesos to 160 families to mitigate losses from July rains.

In Sonora, Conagua has implemented emergency cleaning and drainage operations in Bacoachi, Aconchi, and Guaymas to reduce flood risks, a move intended to benefit over 4,400 residents. Meanwhile, in Ciudad Juárez, the Junta de Agua y Saneamiento de Juárez (JMAS) has started replacing aging water valves at the intersection of Óscar Flores and Montes Urales to improve supply control and prevent leaks.

In Veracruz, municipal teams in Coatzacoalcos are performing cleaning and debris removal in neighborhoods affected by recent rainfall. Mayor Pedro Miguel Rosaldo García also announced plans to operationalize a new Civic Court by December to manage administrative infractions.

Previous efforts in Hidalgo, Puebla, Mérida, and Tlaxcala focused on citizen participation, the rehabilitation of storm-water grates, the implementation of rain gardens, and desilting operations to manage the rainy season and the El Niño phenomenon.
