Mexico City and Mérida announce property tax freezes for 2027

In Mexico City, Head of Government Clara Brugada Molina announced that the property tax (predial) will not increase during her administration. To facilitate the regularization of debts, she announced that in 2027, the city will not charge fines or surcharges to taxpayers with outstanding balances. Brugada also presented an initiative for the Law of Tenancy Relations and Fair Rents, which seeks to establish fair, reasonable, and affordable housing. The proposal includes the creation of a Tenancy Ombudsman to prevent abuses and could impose fines of up to 46,924 pesos on landlords who increase rents beyond the annual inflation rate.

In Mérida, Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada announced that the city will also maintain its property tax at current levels for 2027, marking the third consecutive year without an increase. The municipal council approved the 2027 Fiscal Law, which aims to protect citizens' finances while maintaining healthy municipal accounts and avoiding debt.
