Mérida Classical Theatre Festival 2026 Showcases Euripides Classics and New Works

The International Classical Theatre Festival in Mérida continues its 2026 season at the Roman Theatre of Mérida, presenting three main productions from July 31 to August 2. The program includes Euripides' tragedy "Medea", the drama "Alejandro y el eunuco persa", and the mythic piece "Jasón y las Furias", all of which premiered the previous summer and were also shown in a recent extension of the festival in Medellín.

In addition to the classic repertoire, the festival features contemporary pieces such as "Bacanal" by Juan Carlos Rubio, a modern take on Euripides' "The Bacchae". The performances emphasize accessibility, with "Medea" staged by a company that includes visually impaired actors and adapted for audiences over 14. Notable participants include actress Beatriz Solís, who highlighted the value of the festival's extensions for performers.

The event draws audiences to the historic venue, which seats over 3,000 spectators, and aims to balance traditional tragedies with newer dramaturgy, reflecting ongoing efforts to diversify the festival’s programming.
