Overview

The 72nd International Classical Theatre Festival in Mérida opened its summer program with a dance‑theatre rendition of Spartacus in the historic Roman Theatre. Starring Miguel Ángel Muñoz and featuring 18 dancers from the Düsseldorf Ballet Theatre, the production blended classical ballet with narration and original music to portray the final moments of the rebel leader. From 31 July to 2 August, the programme expanded to include three classical productions – Euripides’ tragedy Medea, the drama Alejandro y el eunuco persa, and the mythic Jasón y las Furias. The Medea staging featured an inclusive cast incorporating visually‑impaired actors. In mid-August, the festival hosted Fedra en los infiernos, a renewed version of the classical myth by José María del Castillo, featuring Lydia Bosch and Julio Peña.

The festival concluded its programming with the musical comedy “Las 9 Musas”. Written and directed by the collective of Xènia Reguant, Ricard Reguant, and Ferrán González, the production offered a contemporary reading of mythology, exploring how technology and power threaten human essence. Following the festival, Teatros del Canal, in collaboration with the Mérida Festival and the Community of Madrid, will present “Electra jonda” from 5 to 18 September. Directed by Manuel Canseco, this reimagining of the Greek tragedy integrates flamenco dance and singing within an Andalusian setting.
