Mérida Classical Theatre Festival premieres 'Spartacus' dance

The 72nd edition of the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida opened with "Spartacus," a dance‑theatre production that blends classical ballet with narration. The show stars Miguel Ángel Muñoz and features 18 dancers from the German Düsseldorf Ballet Theatre, choreographed by Peter Agardi. Original music by Tuti Fernández accompanies excerpts from Mussorgsky, Saint‑Saëns and others, portraying the final moments of the rebel slave leader.

The performance takes place in the historic Roman Theatre of Mérida, Spain, during the summer evenings of July‑August and aims to attract both local audiences and visitors from across Spain and abroad. Festival director emphasizes the event’s goal of offering innovative reinterpretations of Greco‑Roman themes, combining ancient stories with contemporary artistic forms.
