Mérida hosts ninth Mucbipollo Fair for Festival de las Ánimas

The ninth edition of the Mucbipollo Fair took place in the San Sebastián neighborhood of Mérida as part of the 2026 Festival de las Ánimas. Inaugurated by Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada, the event featured 18 vendors—16 from Mérida and two from the state's interior—offering approximately 3,000 cans of pib (mucbipollo).

In addition to traditional chicken and pork versions, vendors offered varieties such as castacán, lechón negro, and cochinita. Other regional treats including marquesitas and traditional sweets were also available. Prices for a full can ranged from 900 to 1,000 pesos, with individual portions priced between 115 and 120 pesos.

The event included a traditional ceremony for the 'entierro del pib' (the Mayan method of underground cooking) and featured live music, folk dance, and children's activities. Officials noted that the fair has grown significantly since its inception in 2017, serving as a vital economic opportunity for local families and a way to preserve cultural traditions related to Janal Pixán.
