Mérida Mayor Announces Heritage and Youth Tourism Initiatives

Mérida mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada highlighted several municipal projects aimed at combining cultural heritage with sustainable tourism. She praised university students from the Universidad Marista for designing architectural concepts for the city’s first tourist stop at Dzibilchaltún, noting that “Las y los jóvenes construyen sociedades más justas. Su participación da vida y esperanza a Mérida todos los días.” The proposals stress low‑impact ecotourism, use of regional materials and protection of the cenote and surrounding environment.

In the same announcement, Patrón Laviada unveiled plans to install a replica of the ancient Mayan monument Estela 18 de Uxmal at the entrance of Paseo de Montejo. The replica, part of a city‑wide effort to honor Mayan heritage—especially the role of women—will join other cultural displays along the historic avenue, reinforcing Mérida’s identity as a center of Maya history and modern urban life.
