Mérida mayor advances heritage, green and park projects

Entities: Cecilia Patrón Laviada · Mérida Enchula · Centro Iberoamericano de Desarrollo Estratégico Urbano (CIDEU) · Yucatán · Mérida

Overview

In early July 2026, Mérida mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada unveiled student‑designed concepts for a tourist stop at Dzibilchaltún and a replica of the Mayan Estela 18 de Uxmal on Paseo de Montejo, tying cultural heritage to urban life.

Later that month the administration highlighted its environmental agenda. The Mega Puntos Verdes recycling program, launched in 2018, was cited among Ibero‑America’s top socio‑environmental initiatives, handling more than 2,000 tonnes of recyclables each month and operating 14 collection centers and 13 green points. Simultaneously, the city pressed ahead with its first Green Corridor in Ciudad Caucel, featuring a rain garden and sustainable drainage to curb flooding, recharge the aquifer and boost biodiversity.

By the end of July the mayor added a major public‑space renewal. The municipal council approved tenders for the initial 60 parks under the “Mérida Enchula” programme, upgrading lighting, walkways, children’s areas and infrastructure such as water‑supply and electricity, while also funding mosquito‑control measures. Patrón Laviada’s appointment as vice‑president of the Centro Iberoamericano de Desarrollo Estratégico Urbano underscores her expanding role in shaping sustainable urban policy for Mérida and the Yucatán region.
