Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada Boosts Recycling and Green Corridor Projects
The Mega Puntos Verdes recycling program in Mérida was named one of the best socio‑environmental projects in Ibero‑America, ranking among more than 2,000 initiatives from 29 countries. The program, launched in 2018, now operates 14 collection centers and 13 specific green points, handling over 2,000 tonnes of recyclable material and receiving more than 5,000 citizen visits each month. Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada said the recognition reflects broad community participation in waste separation and circular‑economy efforts.
In parallel, the city is advancing the construction of its first Green Corridor in Ciudad Caucel, which will include a rain garden and sustainable urban drainage systems to capture storm‑water, reduce flooding, replenish the aquifer and create new green space for biodiversity. The mayor, accompanied by the director of the environmental unit, highlighted the project as a modern, nature‑based solution to urban growth challenges.
