Mérida Theatre Festival features Julio Peña and Lydia Bosch

The Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival is hosting the production ‘Fedra en los infiernos’, a renewed version of the classical myth written by José María del Castillo. The play features actor Julio Peña as Hippolytus and Lydia Bosch in the title role of Phaedra.

For Peña, the production marks a significant stage debut at the ancient Roman Theatre in Mérida. The actor, known for his roles in ‘A través de mi ventana’ and ‘Berlín’, described the experience of performing the complex role as “magical” following a positive reception from the audience.

For Bosch, the performance represents a return to the theatre after 37 years. The production alters traditional tragic rules by allowing Phaedra to leave the underworld to confront her past and seek to clear her name, exploring themes of desire and social judgment.
