Mérida to launch public art initiative to beautify urban spaces

The Mérida City Council has announced a new urban beautification and cultural initiative titled ‘Ciudad con Arte y Cultura,’ part of the broader ‘Mérida Enchula’ strategy. Led by Mayor Cecilia Patrón Lavapiés, the project aims to democratize art and strengthen community identity through the installation of public sculptures, paintings, and the renovation of 11 city roundabouts.

A central feature of the project is the installation of a replica of the Estela 18 de Uxmal at the end of Paseo de Montejo. This monument, which represents Mayan deities and the presence of women in culture through the figure of the goddess Chaac Chel, will be produced by artisans from Muna with an estimated municipal investment of 3 to 4 million pesos.

Other featured works include a sculpture titled ‘pájaro’ by Yucatecan artist William Gaver, to be displayed at Los Portales del Centro, and ‘El Nido’ by Oaxacan artist Amador Montes in the Callejón del Congreso. The initiative seeks to create new cultural and tourist nodes while promoting the enjoyment of public spaces.
