MS Dhoni to decide IPL 2027 participation by December
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has indicated that his participation in the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will depend on a comprehensive medical assessment. Speaking at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, the 45-year-old former Indian captain stated that he intends to evaluate his physical readiness before December.
Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to fitness issues, primarily a calf injury. He used a light-hearted metaphor to describe his situation, telling medical professionals that if he is not fit enough, they must ensure that this “old vintage vehicle” is properly maintained to run smoothly on the road.
His decision comes ahead of the IPL 2027 player retention deadline. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management, including CEO Kasi Viswanathan, has expressed optimism regarding a potential return, though the final choice rests with the veteran wicketkeeper-batter. The franchise has recently undergone leadership changes, including the appointment of Zaheer Khan as head coach following the departure of Stephen Fleming.
