MS Dhoni IPL 2027 participation uncertainty

Following his absence from the 2026 Indian Premier League season due to injury, MS Dhoni’s participation in the 2027 season remains uncertain. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan expressed optimism regarding a potential return, stating, “I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there.” Viswanathan noted that while the decision rests entirely with Dhoni, the veteran typically communicates his choice to the franchise upon arriving in Chennai.

Dhoni has indicated that a decision regarding his future may be made before December 2026, noting that any comeback depends on medical assessments of his fitness following calf issues. Speaking at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, the 45-year-old former Indian captain stated he intends to evaluate his physical readiness before the end of the year. Using a metaphor to describe his physical condition, Dhoni noted that if he is not fit enough, doctors must ensure his “old vintage vehicle” is properly maintained to run smoothly.

Support for a comeback has been voiced by former CSK player Suresh Raina, while former head coach Stephen Fleming highlighted Dhoni’s ongoing value through his mentorship of younger players. Amidst these fitness concerns, the CSK franchise has also undergone leadership changes, including the appointment of Zaheer Khan as head coach following the departure of Stephen Fleming.

Reflecting on recent team dynamics, Dhoni acknowledged the struggles of CSK, noting the franchise has failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. He contrasted this with the recent dominance of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who secured back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026.
