MS Dhoni holds stake in Chennai Super Kings franchise
Reports indicate that former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni holds over one lakh shares in the IPL franchise, acquired through private off-market transactions. While the number of shares is significant, it represents a small fraction of the total equity, estimated at approximately 0.01% to 0.02% of the company.
In contrast, the Srinivasan family maintains a controlling interest of over 55%, while public shareholders hold nearly 40% of the total share capital. Based on recent IPL franchise valuations exceeding Rs 16,600 crore, Dhoni’s personal holding is estimated to be worth between Rs 2.6 crore and Rs 3 crore.
CSK management has officially denied recent reports suggesting that Dhoni had entered formal negotiations to acquire a larger stake, such as 15% to 25%. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan stated that no formal ownership requests or discussions regarding such a stake increase have taken place between Dhoni and the franchise management or the Srinivasan family.
