MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings ownership rumors

Reports emerged suggesting that negotiations between former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management had stalled. These reports indicated that Dhoni sought a stake in the franchise, with demands reportedly ranging from 25% to 20%, while the team offered 5.5%. Commentators noted the high valuation of the franchise, estimated at approximately 1.8 billion, making such a stake acquisition a significant financial undertaking.

In response, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan dismissed the claims of a rift or ownership negotiations, describing the rumors as ‘completely baseless.’ Regarding Dhoni’s future with the team following his absence from the 2026 IPL season due to injury, Viswanathan stated that no official decisions have been made and emphasized that the franchise would welcome Dhoni back in any capacity, whether as a player, coach, or mentor, noting, ‘MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that.’

Subsequent reports clarified that while Dhoni does hold over one lakh shares acquired through private off-market transactions, this represents a very small fraction of total equity, estimated at approximately 0.01% to 0.02%. In contrast, the Srinivasan family maintains a controlling interest of over 55%, with public shareholders holding nearly 40%. Based on recent franchise valuations exceeding Rs 16,600 crore, Dhoni’s personal holding is estimated to be worth between Rs 2.6 crore and Rs 3 crore. CSK management has officially denied that any formal negotiations or requests for a larger stake, such as 15% to 25%, have occurred.
