MSF calls for release of detained surgeon Dr. Mohammed Obeid

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is demanding the immediate release of Dr. Mohammed Obeid, an orthopedic surgeon detained by Israeli forces since October 26, 2024. Dr. Obeid was arrested while providing medical care at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

MSF reports that Dr. Obeid is being held in difficult conditions with minimal contact with his family, and his only outside connection is through rare visits from his lawyer. The organization expressed extreme concern regarding his health and dignity.

As one of the few remaining orthopedic surgeons in northern Gaza, Dr. Obeid’s absence is critical given the high demand for specialized care, including urgent needs for children and long-term rehabilitation for approximately 6,000 amputees. MSF stated that under international humanitarian law, medical personnel must be protected and should not be penalized for performing their duties. The organization also called for the release of all Gaza medical professionals currently held in arbitrary detention.
