Detention of Gaza medical professionals by Israel

Overview

International and political entities are calling for the release of medical professionals detained by Israeli forces in Gaza.

In late October 2024, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) demanded the immediate release of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mohammed Obeid, who was arrested while providing care at Kamal Adwan Hospital. MSF reported that Dr. Obeid is being held in difficult conditions with minimal family contact, noting his absence is critical for treating amputees in northern Gaza. By late October 2026, Italian MP Stefania Ascari of the Five Star Movement held a press conference to demand the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. Dr. Abu Safiya, who treated children at Kamal Adwan Hospital, has been incarcerated by Israel since December 2024 without formal charges or a trial. Ascari criticized the treatment of the physician and called for sanctions against the Israeli government.
