Ukraine endures deadliest month for civilians amid wave of hospital attacks
The United Nations said June 2026 was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since the war began, recording at least 293 deaths and 1,990 injuries. Almost half of the casualties were caused by long‑range missiles and drones, striking cities such as Kyiv and Dnipro far from the front line. The report noted a surge in explosive drone strikes, turning the front line into a “dead‑zone.”
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned that Russian forces are conducting a deliberate campaign against Ukraine’s health system. Between April 2022 and December 2025 MSF documented more than 20 attacks on its facilities, while the World Health Organization logged 2,815 attacks on health sites, 2,319 of which hit facilities directly, causing 224 deaths and 902 injuries. MSF’s coordinator Robin Meldrum said, “These attacks are too consistent, too frequent and too precise to be accidental.” The organization highlighted the use of FPV drones targeting ambulances and marked medical vehicles, noting a 66 % drop in doctors at an MSF‑supported hospital in Kherson since 2022.
