MSF suspends maternity hospital operations in Haiti due to violence

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has suspended medical activities at the Isaïe Jeanty maternity hospital in the Cité Soleil district of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, due to renewed clashes between armed groups. This marks the second suspension of services at the facility in less than two months.

As of August 7, 2026, the fighting has deprived thousands of women of essential sexual and reproductive healthcare services in an area where medical access is already extremely limited. The violence has caused a surge in casualties; MSF reported treating 27 gunshot wound patients at its Cité Soleil and Tabarre facilities within a 24-hour period, prompting the activation of mass casualty protocols.

MSF noted that while some staff attempted to provide care under gunfire, most personnel were forced to evacuate for safety. The organization is calling on all parties to respect medical facilities and ensure safe access for the population to receive care.
