MSMEs urged to adopt technology and quality systems for global competition
Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Jamaica and the Philippines are being urged to adopt more rigorous standards and technologies to compete in global markets.
In Jamaica, the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) is advising MSMEs to strengthen internal quality systems. Sheneecia Salmon, Export Research, Policy and Advocacy Manager at JMEA, emphasized that export readiness requires more than just certifications. She noted that businesses must provide evidence of production methods, raw material usage, and processing controls. Key recommendations include establishing documented procedures, maintaining traceability, and implementing recall plans to meet international regulatory requirements.
In the Philippines, discussions surrounding the BizKarteng Pinoy Podcast, in partnership with Converge SME Solutions, highlighted the necessity of technology adoption for Filipino MSMEs. As these enterprises account for approximately 99 percent of businesses and a significant portion of the nation's GDP and employment, overcoming barriers to digitalization is seen as essential for productivity and scaling beyond local markets.
