Global MSME development and market readiness initiatives
Overview
Efforts to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Jamaica, the Philippines, and India have focused on enhancing competitiveness through technology, quality standards, and market access.
In Jamaica and the Philippines, initial emphasis was placed on the necessity of adopting rigorous quality systems and digital technologies. In Jamaica, the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) advised businesses to implement documented procedures and traceability to meet international regulatory requirements. In the Philippines, discussions highlighted that overcoming digitalization barriers is essential for MSMEs, which represent approximately 99 percent of businesses.
Subsequent initiatives in India and Jamaica have shifted toward broader market readiness and infrastructure. In India, programs such as the Walmart Vriddhi Connect and the Andhra Pradesh MSME and Entrepreneurship Development Policy 2024–29 aim to facilitate cross-border trade, digital commerce, and the development of 175 MSME Parks. In Jamaica, the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) and various business associations are working to transition enterprises from basic capacity building toward sustainable commercial growth.
