MST and Brazilian universities launch AI platform for family farming

The Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), in partnership with the University of Brasília (UnB) and China Agricultural University, has developed the Digital Family Agroecology Laboratory. This initiative uses artificial intelligence to address the technological gap in family farming, where currently less than 10% of farmers have access to such tools.

The platform, utilizing technology from the Chinese state-owned company Sinomach Digital, employs sensors and satellite data to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and pest presence in real time. Users can access this data via mobile devices or computers to manage irrigation and machinery remotely. The project is recognized as having significant global impact potential for the Global South.
