Brazil-China AI agroecology collaboration
Overview
The Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) in Brazil, in collaboration with the University of Brasília and China Agricultural University, has developed the Digital Family Agroecology Laboratory. This artificial intelligence platform utilizes satellite data and sensors to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and pest activity in real time.
The initiative aims to bridge the technological gap in family farming, where access to such tools is currently limited to less than 10% of farmers. By providing data via mobile devices and computers, the platform allows for remote management of irrigation and machinery. The project has been recognized by China’s National Development and Reform Commission as one of ten world-leading AI initiatives for agriculture, reportedly increasing maize yields by nearly 200% and supporting over 1,000 farming families.
