Airbus and MTU Aero Engines Drive European Hybrid‑Electric and Hydrogen Fuel‑Cell Aircraft Development
Airbus is advancing a hybrid‑electric architecture for short‑to‑medium range aircraft under the EU‑backed LEIA project, which integrates high‑voltage generation and distribution and aims for a ground demonstration by 2027. The effort involves partners such as Pratt & Whitney, GKN Aerospace, MTU Aero Engines and several research institutes.
MTU Aero Engines reported successful tests of the hydrogen and air supply systems for its Flying Fuel Cell (FFC) and is assembling a 350 kW fuel‑cell stack and a full‑system demonstrator in Munich. The work, conducted with Airbus and within the European HEROPS clean‑aviation research programme, moves the technology toward flight‑like validation.
Airbus and MTU also announced a joint venture to develop a fully electric hydrogen fuel‑cell propulsion system, following a memorandum of understanding signed at the Paris Air Show. The new entity will pool engineering and manufacturing capabilities to accelerate design, testing and certification, targeting operational start‑up in 2027 and supporting the ZEROe climate‑neutral aviation ambition.
Safran has begun a six‑month ground‑testing campaign of its PHILEAS hybrid‑electric engine demonstrator in Istres, France. The program will assess power‑management strategies and the integration of electric machines on a full‑scale engine, providing data for future commercial aircraft propulsion concepts.
