Muhoozi Kainerugaba announces 2031 presidential bid
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2031. Making the declaration via posts on the social media platform X, the 52-year-old military leader expressed confidence in a decisive victory, predicting he would secure 90% of the vote with the support of his father.
Kainerugaba, who leads the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has long been considered a potential successor to the 81-year-old Museveni, who has held power since 1986. The announcement follows the January 2026 elections, in which Museveni was re-elected for a seventh term. Kainerugaba previously indicated interest in the 2026 election but ultimately withdrew to support his father's campaign.
The political announcement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the Museveni administration regarding human rights and the treatment of opposition figures. Prominent opposition leaders, including Bobi Wine and Kizza Besigye, have faced significant legal and political challenges, with Besigye currently on trial for treason.
