Muhoozi Kainerugaba threatens NUP activists amid military investigations

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked controversy following social media statements regarding the National Unity Platform (NUP). Kainerugaba posted on X that the government intends to hang “most of the NUP terrorists,” specifically naming Eddie Mutwe, a prominent activist and former bodyguard for NUP leader Bobi Wine.

Simultaneously, military investigations in Uganda have expanded, reportedly leading to the detention of several senior and former officers. Among those detained is Col. Naboth Mwesigwa, who is being held at Makindye military barracks. Investigations are allegedly examining claims of a possible plot involving military officers and opposition-linked figures, as well as the nature of certain international military contacts.

These developments occur amid heightened political tension as the country approaches the 2026 election period. The investigations follow the reported detentions of retired Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho and Brig. Gen. Charles Bakahumura regarding allegations of false intelligence and treachery.
