Bavarian fire services brace for rising wildfires across Europe
By late July 2026 more than 254 000 ha have burned in Europe, with 1 254 large fires recorded, especially in France and Spain, prompting EU disaster‑relief requests.
German fire services are confronting a surge of incidents. Bavaria’s volunteer fire association, which operates 7 500 stations, says it is “very well equipped” but cites the need for further improvements, including lighter protective clothing, special vehicles for rugged terrain and a proposed new special unit. The state’s helicopter fleet can draw water from lakes and drop it on fires. Baden‑Württemberg’s interior minister offered two police helicopters, each carrying a 900‑liter water tank, to assist French firefighting efforts.
Local outbreaks illustrate the pressure on responders: a large forest fire near St Wendel (Germany) was largely contained after about 500 firefighters worked through the night; fires in Oppenau (Baden‑Württemberg) and Nonnweiler (Saarland) are under investigation, the latter for possible fireworks‑related ignition; two simultaneous blazes in Kremstal, Austria, required three fire brigades; and separate incidents in Backnang, Winnenden, Weiherhammer, Gunzenhausen, Cologne and Meudon (France) involved dozens of units and multi‑agency coordination.
Authorities stress continued vigilance as heavy rain on dry soils raises flood risk. Bavaria and other regions plan further investment, such as the new fire‑station complex in Mosbach, to sustain protection for citizens amid an intensive wildfire season.
