Multiple sclerosis awareness: symptoms and patient experiences

Multiple sclerosis (MS) awareness is being highlighted through personal accounts and medical guidance. Carolina Miranda Aranha, a general practitioner in Santos, Brazil, shares her journey after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease in 2016. Her symptoms, including numbness and impaired vision, first appeared during a medical school entrance exam. Despite skepticism regarding her ability to complete her studies, she graduated from the Metropolitan University of Santos and now practices medicine.

Neurologist Sidney Godoi emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis to preserve patient autonomy. Common early warning signs include blurred vision, persistent numbness, a sensation of electric shocks when moving the neck, limb weakness, and balance issues. While these symptoms can mimic stress or anxiety, MS symptoms typically persist for more than 24 hours without an obvious cause. The Brazilian Association of Multiple Sclerosis (Abem) estimates that over 40,000 people in Brazil have been diagnosed with the condition.
