Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath, disrupting nerve impulse transmission between the brain, spinal cord, and the body. While the disease is not infectious, its development is influenced by a combination of immunological, genetic, and environmental factors. Linked risks include low vitamin D levels, adolescent obesity, smoking, and childhood Epstein-Barr virus infections.

Clinical data indicates that MS frequently appears in young adults, particularly between the ages of 25 and 30, and is two to three times more common in women than in men. While typically associated with these demographics, medical experts note that MS can also affect children and adolescents, with approximately 3% to 5% of cases presenting symptoms before the age of 18. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates approximately 2.8 million people are affected. In Brazil, the Brazilian Association of Multiple Sclerosis (Abem) estimates over 40,000 diagnosed cases.

Early recognition of symptoms is critical for preserving patient autonomy. Key warning signs that persist for more than 24 hours include sudden blurred or double vision, persistent numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, loss of balance, coordination difficulties, and intense fatigue. Some patients also report a sensation of “electric shocks” when moving the neck. Because these symptoms can mimic stress, anxiety, or other conditions, diagnosis typically requires professional neurological evaluation and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While there is currently no cure, advancements in medical protocols and less aggressive treatments allow for better disease management and the minimization of long-term physical and cognitive consequences.
