Mumbai region battered by heavy rains, flooding in Thane and Palghar

The India Meteorological Department warned of heavy to very heavy showers across Mumbai and its suburbs on July 3‑4, 2026. In Mumbai, more than 70 mm fell in five hours, with the highest measurement of 73.8 mm at Supari Tank Municipal School in Bandra. The city recorded over 100 mm in 24 hours, totaling 126 mm on average, and gusty winds of 50‑60 km/h.

Neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar also saw intense rain, recording 65.79 mm and 97.70 mm respectively during the morning‑afternoon period. Low‑lying areas in Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Badlapur, and Vasai experienced water‑logging, road closures, and stranded residents. Tree collapses injured two motorists in Thane and damaged a vehicle in Navi Mumbai. Flooded bridges and interior routes were shut, disrupting traffic.

The extreme weather caused two rain‑related deaths in Mumbai that week, including a man who fell into a manhole in Chandivali and an 11‑year‑old boy killed by a falling tree in Chembur. Public transport continued operating, but commuters faced delays and traffic snarls.
