Muncie residents evacuated as record rainfall causes flooding

Heavy rainfall in Muncie, Indiana, has caused significant flooding, leading to the evacuation of several neighborhoods. The city's mayor reported that eight inches of rain have fallen, surpassing the previous record set in 1913.

Evacuations have targeted areas from Madison Street east to Hackley Street, and Memorial Drive south to 18th Street. The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency reported that 15 people have been displaced and are being sheltered at locations including Grace Baptist Church. Muncie Community Schools have canceled in-person classes for Wednesday and Thursday.

In addition to residential evacuations, the Muncie Sanitary District has suspended trash collection. Authorities have issued travel warnings for the region, advising residents not to drive through moving water. Delaware County Commissioner Shannon Henry stated that the county is preparing a disaster declaration to assist residents and businesses with potential clean-up and repair costs through state or federal funding.
