NATO to hold Steadfast Noon nuclear deterrence drills in Italy

NATO is set to conduct its annual Steadfast Noon nuclear deterrence exercises in Italy from October 13 to 23, 2026. The drills involve 17 member nations and are designed to test command, control, and interoperability procedures among allied forces.

Officials emphasize that the exercises are routine, long-planned, and not directed at any specific state. NATO has clarified that no real nuclear or conventional weaponry will be used during the maneuvers. Romania is participating in the exercise, contributing three F-16 aircraft with conventional capabilities.

The drills take place amid heightened tensions between NATO and Russia. Russia has issued warnings, stating it is prepared to use nuclear weapons if the alliance attempts to isolate the Kaliningrad enclave. NATO leadership maintains that the exercises are defensive in nature and aimed at preserving peace.
