Wildlife sightings in Austria and Germany
Overview
In early October 2026, wildlife sightings were reported in the alpine regions of Tyrol, Austria. A bear was captured on a wildlife camera near Nauders in the Landeck district on October 3, with additional reports of a sighting near Pfunds. Tyrol state officials reviewed the evidence and stated there was “no indication that the bear is intentionally approaching humans or residential areas,” concluding there was no danger to the population.
Simultaneously, authorities in Upper Bavaria, Germany, have been conducting a large-scale search for a suspected large cat, possibly a puma, in the Notzingermoos nature reserve near Munich Airport. The search was triggered by a hunter who captured 51 seconds of thermal video footage showing a large, cat-like animal with a long tail. While experts suggest the footage could depict a puma, the Erding District Office has stated that the species remains unconfirmed.
Police have deployed helicopters, drones, thermal imaging technology, and search dogs to comb the 140-hectare area. Despite these efforts, no definitive traces of the animal have been found. Local authorities in the Erding district have advised residents to exercise caution, supervise children, and keep dogs on leashes as a precaution. Additionally, police have warned the public against the spread of AI-generated images of predators on social media, stating that such content hinders investigation efforts.
