Munich emerges as European defense technology hub

Munich is emerging as a major European hub for defense technology, driven by a surge in German military spending and a concentration of firms specializing in AI-powered drones and military software.

Germany’s 2026 federal budget allocates approximately €82.7 billion to defense, an increase of €29.4 billion over previous fiscal plans. When including an off-budget special modernization fund, total defense spending is expected to reach roughly €108 billion in 2026. This represents a 24% year-on-year increase, marking the first time since 1990 that German military spending has clearly exceeded 2% of its GDP.

Key companies driving this growth in the Munich area include Quantum Systems, which provides drones to Ukraine; Helsing, an AI defense group; and Tytan Technologies, a specialist in interceptor drones. The region’s growth is supported by a combination of engineering talent, technical universities, and a favorable political climate for defense innovation.
