Munich launches autonomous vehicle testing and robotaxi preparations

Munich is becoming a major testing ground for autonomous driving technology in Germany. As part of the MINGA research project, Stadtwerke München (SWM), the Munich Transport Company (MVG), and engineering firm IAV have launched test operations for autonomous on-demand vehicles in the Nymphenburg-Gern district.

Three Volkswagen ID. Buzz vehicles, equipped with high-tech sensors and self-driving software developed by IAV, are undergoing testing on public roads under real traffic conditions. While these initial trips are conducted without passengers, safety personnel remain on board to monitor operations and intervene if necessary. The project focuses on technical performance and the requirements for future passenger service, including interior design and integration into the MVG control center.

Simultaneously, Waymo is preparing for its own autonomous service in the city. The company is beginning with mapping trips, where trained professionals manually navigate vehicles to create high-resolution street maps. Waymo aims to launch public operations by the end of 2027, pending full regulatory approval. The influx of various autonomous providers has raised technical questions regarding the ability of sensor systems to reliably detect narrow, single-track vehicles like motorcycles.
