Munich retiree assists police in catching telephone scammers

Bruno Schmaus, a 79-year-old retiree from Munich, has gained a reputation for outmaneuvering telephone scammers by cooperating with law enforcement. In a recent incident, scammers posing as his son and a police officer attempted to extort 80,000 euros in bail money following a fictional fatal traffic accident.

Rather than hanging up, Schmaus improvised a persona of a helpless, elderly man to stall the callers. This tactic allowed the police to intercept and arrest a 21-year-old courier during a staged money handover in the Pullach district. This marks Schmaus's fifth successful assistance in leading to arrests across various fraud cases, including previous encounters with 'grandparent scams' and unauthorized carpet traders.
