Munich transit updates: S-Bahn tender and station construction deadlines
The Bavarian SPD has called on Deutsche Bahn to complete the major construction at Munich Central Station by 2036. This demand aims to prevent international embarrassment for the city, particularly in preparation for the Olympic Games.
Simultaneously, the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) has launched a Europe-wide tender process for the operation of the Munich S-Bahn network starting in late 2034 through 2041. The current operator, DB Regio, will compete for the contract. The new plan includes the introduction of 90 new Siemens-built trains, which could begin service as early as late 2028.
Future infrastructure changes include the electrification of the route between Ebersberg and Wasserburg and a reconfiguration of the S2 and S3 lines. The expansion of service is also tied to the completion of the second main line (Stammstrecke), currently projected for the mid-2030s.
