Municipalities in Argentina and Chile update animal welfare laws
Municipalities in Argentina and Chile are implementing new measures to enhance animal welfare and wildlife protection.
In Santa Fe, Argentina, the Municipal Council approved a project to install signage in public parks and plazas. This initiative, proposed by Councilwoman Carolina Capovilla, aims to enforce Ordinance No. 12.750, which protects native wild birds and their habitats by prohibiting hunting, harassment, capture, and the destruction of nests or eggs.
In Valparaíso, Chile, the Municipal Council unanimously approved modifications to the Responsible Pet Ownership Ordinance. Following requests from the Regional Comptroller, the updates include increasing fines and extending the period for owners to reclaim lost pets from five to twenty days. The new regulations also prohibit animal sacrifice for population control and allow the installation of shelters and feeders for community dogs in public spaces, aligning with national law.
