Municipalities launch drainage projects to combat flooding
Municipalities in Portugal and Brazil are launching infrastructure projects to combat flooding through improved drainage systems.
In Orelhudo, Portugal, Águas de Coimbra has allocated approximately 79,000 euros to install a new stormwater drainage network at Largo da Fonte. The project aims to prevent water accumulation on public roads and protect properties from flooding caused by insufficient existing pipe capacity. The works include installing 53 meters of underground collectors and a transversal channel, with completion expected by late January 2027.
In Resende, Brazil, the local government is beginning a major drainage overhaul in the Jardim Jalisco region to address flooding issues that have persisted for over 50 years. The project involves replacing old 400mm diameter pipes with new structures measuring at least 1,000mm in diameter to significantly increase runoff capacity. Initial work near the Paraíba do Sul River is scheduled to begin in late October, taking advantage of lower river levels during the dry season.
