Ekrem İmamoğlu faces massive prison sentences in İBB corruption case

The corruption investigation involving the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and former Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has reached significant developments. An indictment naming İmamoğlu as an ‘organisational leader’ seeks prison sentences ranging from 828 to 2,352 years across 14 different charges, including bribery, fraud, and money laundering.

During court proceedings, several defendants provided testimonies regarding alleged bribery and extortion schemes. Businessperson Cüneyt Yakut claimed he provided a 10 million TL check to Murat Ongun as a bribe. Advertising professional Deniz Dörtyol testified that he was forced to pay Kültür AŞ to maintain access to advertising spaces. Additionally, Süleyman Uzun claimed he paid a total of 200,000 dollars in two installments to facilitate business dealings.

Another major development involves Murat Gülibrahimoğlu, a fugitive defendant described as a key figure in the alleged criminal organization. Authorities have initiated extradition proceedings after he was reportedly apprehended in Greece. Gülibrahimoğlu is accused of managing illegal waste disposal operations and generating significant illicit revenue through various companies.
