Spain launches regional flu and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns

Multiple regions across Spain have launched coordinated influenza and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns for the 2026-2027 season. A primary focus of this year’s strategy is the expansion of pediatric immunization and the use of intranasal vaccines to increase coverage among children.

In Murcia and Extremadura, the age limit for flu vaccination has been extended to include children up to 11 years old. Extremadura is implementing a new strategy by administering nasal sprays directly in 466 schools to improve access. Murcia has also accelerated its schedule to preempt a potential influenza epidemic.

In Andalusia, the campaign begins on October 1, featuring high-dose vaccines for those aged 75 and older—a group previously eligible only at age 80. Andalusia is also prioritizing residents in nursing homes and disability centers. In Madrid, the first phase starts October 5, targeting those over 60 and young children, with the broader population following on October 19.

Across these regions, health authorities are prioritizing high-risk groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions, to reduce community transmission and healthcare system pressure.
