Murcia police arrest four in alleged illegal adoption scheme
Spanish National Police have arrested four individuals in Murcia for their alleged involvement in an illegal adoption scheme involving a two-year-old girl. The investigation, initiated after social services in Totana detected irregularities, revealed that the biological parents had offered the child to a known family of Honduran origin.
The scheme allegedly involved the payment of 20,000 euros to the child's mother, along with ongoing weekly and monthly payments to cover maintenance, upbringing, and purported administrative costs. To maintain the appearance of legality, the biological family reportedly used fake telephone calls and claimed a specialized lawyer and a nursery director were managing the process.
The suspects face charges of illegal adoption, fraud, and identity theft. The Directorate-General for Families, Children and Work-Life Balance had been monitoring the child's situation since her birth in 2024 to ensure her protection.
