Medical research highlights the critical importance of muscle mass and mobility in maintaining health and longevity as people age. Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass that accelerates after age 50, poses significant risks to metabolic health and independence. Muscles function as an endocrine organ, releasing myokines that help regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and protect the brain from dementia.
To combat muscle loss, experts recommend a three-pillar approach: progressive resistance training to maintain fast-twitch muscle fibers, increased protein intake (approximately 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight for those over 50), and adequate sleep for cellular repair.
A study published in JAMA Network Open involving over 13,000 participants in Taiwan further underscores the link between physical performance and mortality. Researchers found that simple mobility tests—such as the single-leg stand, the chair stand test, and the Timed Up-and-Go test—are highly effective at predicting life expectancy. The study suggests that maintaining mobility and balance can significantly reduce mortality risks in seniors.
