Muscle mass maintenance and functional strength tests
Maintaining muscle mass is critical for long-term health, as losing it can lead to sarcopenia—a condition characterized by a progressive decline in muscle strength and function. This loss can be caused by aging, sedentary lifestyles, or restrictive dieting, and it impacts mobility, metabolism, and the body's ability to recover from illness.
Experts warn that body weight alone is an insufficient indicator of health. Rapid weight loss through restrictive diets may result in the loss of muscle tissue rather than just fat, potentially leading to sarcopenic obesity. This condition increases risks for insulin resistance, falls, and fractures, particularly in older populations.
To assess functional strength and “fitness age,” fitness instructor Amanda Dvorak recommends three simple tests:
1. Plank: Holding a proper plank position for 60 seconds to test core and total body stability. 2. Push-ups: Performing 10 consecutive, high-quality push-ups to evaluate upper body strength. 3. Sit-to-stand: Testing the ability to rise from a seated position without using hands to evaluate lower body function.
